Not doing what you committed to?

Summary: I can’t count the number of times where I wanted to achieve something and thought it sounded great then when I had to put in the work it was overwhelming and I gave up. I have changed my habits and also my mindset so I stay committed to what I want in life. We all have different commitments and It is our responsibility to follow through. Whether a commitment is with someone else or yourself it is still a commitment. Another reason that people don’t follow through with their commitments is because they don’t feel worthy. They want something and think they deserve it but they don’t actually believe it. In this blog I highlight and give advice on how to change your mindset and your habits so you start committing to what you want.

A little background about me. I used to do drugs, play video games, and be on social media ALL the time. I wanted instant gratification and got NOTHING done. I noticed how unproductive I was being and knew if I wanted to achieve anything in life I would need to change my habits and attitude. My first step to change was becoming aware. I knew it was a problem and the way I was living my life wasn’t doing anything good for me. Once I was aware I set hard boundaries for myself. I created a schedule and stuck to it. I held myself accountable and changed my habits. I limited my time playing video games, stopped doing drugs, and cut down my time on social media. As I made those first small steps to change I noticed a difference in myself. I felt lighter and felt like I could get more done in a day and not feel so overwhelmed with responsibilities in life. So how can you implement what I did into your life?

The first step is to become aware of what you want to change. What are the areas in your life that you want to change? Is there a certain habit that you want to kick? Do you want to start a business? Do you want to be more productive day to day? Those are just a few examples of questions you can ask yourself but be sure to ask yourself as many questions as possible. If you keep having questions, answer them. Give yourself 30 minutes for this. Once you find out what you want to change it can feel overwhelming but pick 2 or 3 things that mean the most to you. That’s where you will start and slowly you can add more in.

The next part is the part of action. This is where you have to change whatever you choose. Hypothetically let’s say you wanted to spend less time on social media. You can start with limiting yourself. If you spend 5 hours a day on it then lower it to 4.5 hours and with that half hour you just give yourself to fill it with something else. Paint, read, go outside, go to lunch, or whatever makes you feel fulfilled. It is up to you now to hold yourself accountable and change your habits.

The final part that can get tricky is to change your mindset. Oftentimes the reason people don’t achieve what they want is because their subconscious doesn’t believe they deserve that. I know that I used to not believe I was worthy and didn’t feel like I deserved to live life better. I now realize that believing that wasn’t true and I shouldn’t have. When you are pushing yourself and changing your habits and starting to live a better life you will have this little negative voice challenging the change. Don’t listen to it. A tool that can help combat it is writing or thinking through it. Let’s say the thought is “what will I do if I’m not on my phone? I don't want to be bored” The challenging thought to that would be “ Not being on my phone has given me the ability to have more free time to do what I enjoy and I deserve to do that.” This isn’t going to happen overnight. Like most things in life it will take time and dedication. The more you fight and keep going the easier it will get to change your mindset.
