Why Questioning Your Beliefs Is the First Step to Growth | The GROW Method Explained w/ Braiden Belnap

ree

Summary: On this week’s episode of Journey to Authenticity, I dove deep into a transformational framework that’s changing the way people think about growth: the GROW method—Grasp, Realize, Overcome, and Work. This episode wasn’t just a conversation; it was a challenge—a nudge to question everything you’ve been told, everything you’ve believed, and everything you’ve avoided when it comes to becoming who you’re truly meant to be.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in patterns, unsure of your purpose, or disconnected from your faith and identity, the GROW method offers a grounded, soul-level approach to finding clarity and building momentum.

Let’s break it down and explore how you can integrate this mindset into your daily life.

1. Grasp: Know What You’re Holding Onto

The first step is Grasp—not just understanding where you are, but identifying what you’re actually holding onto.

Many people are living with inherited beliefs—ideas about success, worth, faith, identity, and even God—that were never truly theirs. Before you can change anything, you have to grasp the truth of your current state. This means getting radically honest about:

  • What you believe and why.

  • What you value and whether it’s aligned with your actions.

  • What’s holding you back—fear, shame, doubt, or unresolved pain.

In the episode, we talk about how powerful it is to pause and ask: Are these my beliefs or were they handed to me?That discomfort? That resistance? That’s the beginning of growth.

🛠 How to implement this step:

  • Journal daily for a week and write out the core beliefs you live by. Then ask, “Where did this come from?”

  • Pay attention to your language—how often do you say things like “I have to” or “I should”? That’s often a sign you’re operating from someone else’s expectation.

  • Create a quiet space to reflect or pray. Invite honesty and sit with whatever comes up, even if it’s uncomfortable.

2. Realize: Open Your Eyes to the Truth

Once you’ve grasped what you’re working with, it’s time to Realize what’s actually true.

This is about spiritual and emotional awakening. It’s when you stop living in the fog and start seeing your reality clearly—both the beautiful and the hard parts. It’s realizing:

  • You are not your past.

  • You are not your trauma.

  • You are not broken—you’re becoming.

It’s also realizing how much power you have. Power to choose, to grow, to shift, to rebuild, and to create a life rooted in truth. Many people wait for a sign or a breakthrough, but the breakthrough begins when you realize you were never stuck—you were just misaligned.

🛠 How to implement this step:

  • Begin affirming truths about your identity every morning. Speak them out loud.

  • Revisit old stories you tell yourself (like “I’m not good enough” or “I always mess up”) and challenge them with truth.

  • Surround yourself with people who reflect the best version of you—not just who you’ve been.

3. Overcome: Break the Cycles That Keep You Small

Overcoming isn’t just about beating obstacles—it’s about letting go of the identity that’s rooted in limitation.

It’s the most challenging step, because it often involves surrender. Surrendering your pride, your need to control, your fear of what happens if you really step into who you are. Overcoming means doing the inner work to dismantle the beliefs, behaviors, and environments that have kept you playing small.

It also involves forgiveness—of others and of yourself. Sometimes what we’re really trying to overcome is our own inner critic.

🛠 How to implement this step:

  • Identify one habit or mindset that’s holding you back. Get curious about it, then take steps to replace it.

  • Practice forgiveness rituals—write letters (even if you never send them) or speak the words out loud in prayer or meditation.

  • Seek guidance—a mentor, coach, or therapist can help you see what you can’t yet.

4. Work: Build the Life You’re Meant to Live

Now comes the final step: Work.

This isn’t hustle culture. This is intentional, aligned, purpose-driven action.

It’s waking up every day and choosing to live in alignment with your values and vision. It’s committing to spiritual growth, emotional maturity, and personal integrity. It’s showing up—even when it’s messy.

Work isn’t just about effort—it’s about consistency. It's about building a life that reflects who you really are, not who the world told you to be.

🛠 How to implement this step:

  • Set goals that are rooted in purpose, not pressure.

  • Create routines that support your physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

  • Hold yourself accountable with grace. Progress over perfection.
