Reaching the Next Level of Success: Olympic Team Journey w/Hugh Smith & Braiden Belnap

Summary:  Success is often seen as the result of talent, hard work, and a little bit of luck. However, the path to achieving your goals involves much more than just these elements. It requires surrounding yourself with the right people, being unwaveringly dedicated to your journey, and cultivating a strong, positive mindset. In this blog, we’ll explore practical strategies for finding a supportive community, staying dedicated, and improving your mindset through practices like breathwork, meditation, and maintaining a schedule. In this episode of Journey to Authenticity I spoke with Hugh Smith.  He shared his journey of bein an olympic athlete for Canada.  He also shared the tools he used to gain his success. In this blog I am diving deeper into the tools he gave during the episode so you can start living a life that is authentic to you!

Success is rarely a solo journey. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can provide the support, motivation, and inspiration needed to stay on track. Here’s how to find and cultivate a community that aligns with your goals:

Before you can find the right community, it's important to understand your own values, interests, and goals. Ask yourself:

- What are your core beliefs?

- What activities or hobbies do you enjoy?

- What kind of people inspire and motivate you?

By understanding what matters most to you, you’ll be better equipped to find a community that shares those same values and interests.

Once you’ve identified your values, start exploring groups and organizations that align with them. Here are some places to start:

Local Clubs and Meetups: Whether it’s a hobby-based group, a professional organization, or a volunteer organization, joining local clubs can help you meet like-minded people.

Online Communities: Websites like Reddit, Facebook Groups, and LinkedIn offer a wide range of groups dedicated to specific interests, professional goals, and lifestyles.

Workshops and Conferences: Attending events related to your interests or profession can be a great way to meet people who share your passion.

Building a community requires effort on your part. Be open to meeting new people and make an effort to engage in conversations. Some tips include:

Start Small: Begin by attending smaller events or joining smaller groups where it's easier to connect with others.

Listen Actively:Show genuine interest in others by asking questions and listening to their stories.

Follow Up: Don’t let connections fade away. Follow up with people you’ve met by sending a message or inviting them to coffee.

Being a part of a community is not just about what you can get, but also what you can give. Contribute your time, skills, and knowledge to help others. This not only strengthens the community but also solidifies your place within it.

Dedication is the fuel that drives you toward your goals, even when the journey gets tough. But staying dedicated requires more than just a desire to succeed. Here are steps you can take to cultivate dedication in your life:

The first step to dedication is knowing what you’re working toward. Break down your larger goals into smaller, actionable steps. This makes the journey less overwhelming and helps you see progress along the way.

SMART Goals: Ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Goals: Have a mix of both to keep yourself motivated. Short-term goals provide immediate satisfaction, while long-term goals keep you focused on the bigger picture.

Consistency is key to maintaining dedication. Create a daily routine that prioritizes your goals:

Morning Ritual: Start your day with activities that set a positive tone, such as exercise, reading, or journaling.

Work Blocks: Dedicate specific times of the day to focus on your goals, free from distractions.

Evening Reflection: End your day by reviewing your progress and setting intentions for the next day.

Dedication often requires saying no to distractions and staying committed, even when you don’t feel like it.

Avoid Temptations: Identify common distractions and remove them from your environment.

Reward Yourself: Set up a system of rewards for when you achieve milestones to keep yourself motivated.

Accountability: Share your goals with a friend or mentor who can help keep you accountable.

Dedication is about persistence, even in the face of challenges. View obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.

Growth Mindset: Believe that your abilities can be developed through hard work, and see challenges as a chance to improve.

Learn from Mistakes: Reflect on failures, identify what went wrong, and adjust your approach for the future.

Your mindset plays a crucial role in how you perceive challenges and opportunities. Cultivating a positive, resilient mindset can help you stay dedicated and focused. Here’s how to do it:

Breathwork involves intentional breathing exercises that can help manage stress, increase focus, and improve overall well-being. Here’s how to get started:

Simple Techniques Start with basic exercises like deep breathing or box breathing. Inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, and hold for another four counts. Repeat this cycle several times.

Daily Practice: Incorporate breathwork into your daily routine, such as during your morning ritual or before bed, to help calm your mind and body.

Mindful Breathing:Practice mindful breathing throughout the day, especially during stressful moments. Focus on your breath to bring yourself back to the present moment.

Meditation is a powerful tool for improving focus, reducing stress, and fostering a positive mindset. Here’s how to integrate it into your life:

Start Small: Begin with just 5-10 minutes a day. As you become more comfortable, gradually increase the time.

Find a Quiet Space:Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. This helps create a calming environment conducive to meditation.

Focus on the Present: During meditation, focus on your breath, a mantra, or simply observe your thoughts without judgment. The goal is to bring your mind back to the present moment.

Guided Meditations: If you’re new to meditation, consider using guided meditations available through apps like Headspace or Calm. These can provide structure and help you stay focused.

A well-structured schedule is essential for managing time effectively and staying committed to your goals. Here’s how to create and stick to a schedule:

Prioritize Tasks: Identify the most important tasks that align with your goals and prioritize them in your schedule.

Time Blocking: Allocate specific time blocks for different activities, such as work, exercise, and relaxation. This helps ensure you’re dedicating enough time to each area of your life.

Review and Adjust: Regularly review your schedule to see what’s working and what’s not. Be flexible and willing to make adjustments as needed.

Breaks and Downtime: Don’t forget to schedule breaks and downtime. Rest is crucial for maintaining productivity and avoiding burnout.

Combine Practices for Maximum Impact

These practices—breathwork, meditation, and maintaining a schedule—are most effective when combined. Here’s how to integrate them:

-Morning Routine:Start your day with 10 minutes of meditation followed by breathwork to set a calm, focused tone for the day. Use this time to plan your schedule and set intentions.

Midday Check-In: Take a break in the middle of the day for a quick breathing exercise and a few minutes of meditation. This helps reset your mind and prepares you for the rest of the day.

Evening Reflection: Before bed, review your day, practice some breathwork to unwind, and do a short meditation to calm your mind for a restful night.

Achieving success, whether in your personal life, relationships, or career, requires a holistic approach. By finding and cultivating a supportive community, developing unwavering dedication, and improving your mindset through breathwork, meditation, and effective scheduling, you’ll be well-equipped to reach your goals. Remember, the journey to success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay consistent, be patient with yourself, and trust the process. Your dedication and commitment will pay off in the long run, leading you to the life you’ve always dreamed of.
